Khalid wants to know why reps barred from officiating at school functions

The Star (28/3/2008): Selangor government has sent a letter to the state Education Department demanding an explanation over a directive to schools barring them from allowing representatives from the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), DAP and PAS to officiate at functions.

State executive councillor Dr Xavier Jayakumar said the government had learnt of the directive that barred the representatives from officiating at official school or Parent Teacher Association (PTA) functions recently.

“We do not understand the rationale behind the directive because these representatives are from the state government and they have been elected to office by the people and should be able to attend the functions without problems,” he said.

He said headmasters in the state had been given both written and verbal warnings against allowing representatives from the three parties to officiate at functions.

He said Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had sent the letter to the state Education Department after learning of the directive and had asked for a full explanation on the matter.

Earlier, Xavier and Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad visited the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Section 11, Shah Alam to meet with the temple committee over the issue of its current location.

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple chairman M. Muniandy said the temple had been at its current location for the past 125 years and had served the early plantation workers brought in from India by the British government.

He said in the 60s, the Selangor government decided to develop the estate through the Selangor Development Corporation (PKNS) and the committee had been applying for the land since.

“But the land was instead alienated to the school next to our temple and we have been repeatedly asked to move without any alternative plot of land being given to us,” he said.

Xavier said the state could not settle the land issue as it was under the Education Ministry but would write a letter supporting the temple’s request for the land.

“If that fails then we will try to find an alternative site that is close enough for the devotees go to as this is the only temple serving Hindus from Section 3 to 7 in Shah Alam,” he said.

“I have only been in office (as an exco member) a few days but my phone has not stopped ringing and I have been listening to many issues affecting the Indian community,” he said, adding that the community turned to him because he was the only Indian representative in the state executive council.

He said solving the problems was among his main priorities and the people should start seeing some results within the next 100 days.

Selangor building under siege

Singapore ST (10/3/2008): Groups of PKR and PAS supporters are holding a round-the-clock watch at the three entrances to the Selangor State Secretariat building here.

Several of them said they were there because they feared that the members of the previous administration might try to remove important documents.

People started gathering at 11pm on Saturday after it became increasingly clear that the Opposition had secured a majority of seats.

PKR took 15 seats while DAP and PAS won 13 and eight seats respectively. Barisan Nasional won 20 seats. The Opposition took 17 of the state's parliamentary seats while Barisan won five.

Selangor PAS deputy commissioner Khalid Abdul Samad, who won the Shah Alam parliamentary seat, said supporters were feeling edgy because there was an air of uncertainty.

'They are suspicious of the cars and what they were doing at SUK in the dead of night. There is fear that files containing state information, particularly those relating to finance and projects, may be taken out,' he said.

Mr Khalid went to state secretariat yesterday morning to tell the supporters to be calm and not to provoke anyone. He also asked those not on watch-duty to disperse.

It is learnt that groups of opposition supporters also blocked the entrance to the Mentri Besar's residence in Section 7 here on Saturday night because they feared that outgoing Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo would cart away files from the residence.

Mr Khalid said opposition leaders have told their supporters to let Dr Khir and his family pack and leave the residence.

It is believed that the supporters were even considering blocking the entry to the Selangor Sultan's palace, fearing that Dr Khir would want to meet the Sultan and seek to be sworn in as the Mentri Besar but left when told it was impossible for Dr Khir to be sworn in.

A source from the Mentri Besar's residence said Dr Khir and his family packed up and left in the early hours of Sunday.

It is understood that the Selangor Sultan had urged both sides to remain calm and that Dr Khir should be allowed to leave the residence in peace.

'The Sultan also advised that the state secretariat be sealed off until the new state government is formed,' said a source.

The Federal Reserve Unit personnel were subsequently deployed at the state secretariat. State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said no one other than the state secretary, his deputy or appointed officials were allowed to enter.
